DRV103: 22µF Tantalum Capacitor Burned Out

So I have completed a prototype circuit using the DRV103, and I'm using it to drive a solenoid. The circuit diagram is shown on the lower half of page 13 of the DRV103 datasheet.

When testing the circuit at 18VDC and about 1.6-1.8A, with 25kHz frequency and 50% duty cycle, the 22µF Tantalum capacitor (rated for 50V) burned out.

I believe the capacitor was connected correctly(Long leg to positive), since testing at 0.5A and at 3.0A (Duty cycle at 100%) with separate solenoids worked.

So I'm interested in finding the cause and learning what not to do in the future.

    Thanks for reaching out on E2E!

    Can you provide details on how the capacitor burned out? When did the cap break during your test, was it during startup or DC operation?

    Have you tried replacing the cap with a new one and seeing if the prototype works? The leads on the cap could have potentially been shorted together, causing it to be damaged.

    The capacitor burned out during steady operation, at about 1min and 45s after start up.

    I replaced the capacitor and did a 20min thermal test (@ and 50% duty cycle)

    I will be testing again tomorrow and I will keep you updated.

    By replacing the capacitor, the issue has not persisted.

    Ultimately I am still cautious when testing the unit, since I had expected a capacitor rated for 50V to handle just fine at 18V....

    Maybe a capacitor manufacturing issue?

    Thanks for following up. I agree, the 50V cap should be able to handle 18V input. Maybe the leads were accidentally shorted together or routed backwards?
