DRV8701: DRV8701 current sensing capability

Part Number: DRV8701

Hi,

Does the device support bidirectional current sensing?

In my application, the current across the sense resistor becomes negative when you go quickly forward to reverse drive as the motor's current regenerates back to the Vbus.

From the absolute max table, the SO pin doesn't seem to support negative current sensing.

Also, the datasheet does mention that SO is only valid during forward or reverse drive (pg17)

No the DRV8701 only supports unidirectional current sensing.

That is correct. SO is only valid during forward or reverse. In brake current is recirculating through the motor, and in coast the current is negative.

If you need to measure the bidirectional current, a current shunt monitor like the INA19x series can be used.
