DRV8308: DRV8303 Fault Register Testing

Part Number: DRV8308

Hi guys,

I have the DRV8308 working well in our project.

I was wondering if there is a way to test the Motor Fault Register. I mean is it possible to test things like over temperature, over current, over voltage, etc...?

Or do you just have to wait until the fault line is true and read the fault register?

Thank you,

Reif Heck

  • Reif,

You could create conditions to test these functions.

For overtemperature you could heat the board or device if you have access to a heat gun or chamber.

For overcurrent you could short one of the motor phase pins to GND with a known resistance that should trip the overcurrent. Make sure it's a power resistor.

For overvoltage you could use a bench supply to apply slightly more voltage and check the trip point.

Obviously this is not recommended or prefered but it can be done. The protection features are checked in a safe way during the device testing before the unit leaves TI.

  • Thank you Adam. I'll give those a try. I figured that would be the case since I didn't see anything listed in the DRV8308 Evaluation Board User's Guide.

Thanks again for the fast response.
