DRV10983: DRV10983 max motor phase current limit

Part Number: DRV10983

Hello,

"Drive Current: 2-A Continuous Winding Current(3-A Peak)".

This current value for only one motor phase or total current value? To make the problem clearer ,I added a figure. Which current value can be 2-A in the figure (1 or 2)? How many watts of motor can I drive with this drive?

  • Hi Mutullah,

The DRV10983 has two over current settings the Overcurrent Protection and Open loop current limit. The Overcurrent Protection uses the high side FETs to determine if the device has hit current limit so it compares your current represented by number 1 arrow to see if the device has hit over current. meaning in the datasheet this number is 4A typ so if one phase is outputting 3A and another phase is outputting 2A the current limit will not be tripped.  The Open Loop Current limit uses the total current into the motor to determine if the device has hit over current. This means this current limit will be your number 2 arrow in the figure.

  • Hi Michael ,

Thank you for your supports. Now I am working with DRV10983EVM but  I have a current limit problem. My motor power is 30W and supply voltage is 24V.

I can not start the motor. Motor  immediately falls into the overcurrent state. This problem Can this be releated with my motor paramaters or startup setting?  For instance, my motor phase to center tap resistance is 0,3ohm but I can select 1 ohm in DRV10983 EVM GUI, is  it problem or not?

    Kind Regards,

    Mutullah

  • Hi Mutullah,

to tune the DRV10983 to start up the most efficiently please refer to our DRV10983 Tuning guide:http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slou395d/slou395d.pdf
