    Thanks for posting on the MD forum!

    The hardware and software devices are the same, the only difference in each is whether hardware or software are used to setup the IDRIVE, VDS, MODE, and GAIN settings.

    There are a few other subtle differences which are covered in the datasheet: https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/drv8353.pdf

    For example, the software device offers four settings for Dead Time insertion while the hardware device is fixed at one of these settings.

    I would recommend always starting with the software device and checking later if the hardware device can be used in the case that you don't have an MCU or SPI available.
