Hi there,

I want to base a BLDC generator design on the BOOSTXL-DRV8301 and F28069M launchpad combo. A lot of the TI information talks about motor mode. I am assuming that Generator mode is possible with motorware and there are not any hardware limitions on using the above for power generation?

Are there any changes or recommended changes to these reference designs when power generation is the target?

Hi Adam,

Thanks very much for getting back to me.

The block diagram is below, but the detailed circuitry is based on a TI motor controller reference design doc: TIDU708–February 2015. We have a 48V battery, but will have a BLDC generator running at RPM equivalent to 60V to convert power > 2 KW. Please let me know if you think there are any additional modifications necessary for changing from motor mode to predominantly generator mode.

Hi Adam,

As far as I understand it from reading the motorware documentation, the motor will be turned into a generator when the torque request is negative. IE the motor is spinning forward with the controller generating negative torque and thus negative current. I would like to confirm this assumption, this is why the circuit diagram looks like a motor - but it should be able to switch to a generator via torque command. I have attached another diagram which might illustrate this concept better.

Again, would just like to confirm this assumption is correct, and that no specific additional circuitry is needed to run in generator mode and efficiently charge the 48V battery with the below hardware configuration.

The hardware kit could be as a generator inverter, but, unfortunately, we don't have any reference design for the generator control till now. Of course, you may use some code modules in motorWare for the generator control, like Clark, Park, PI/PID, svgen...
