DRV10983-Q1: Brake and MotorSpeed

Part Number: DRV10983-Q1

Hi All,

We have a customer asking to two quick questions about the DRV10983-Q1.

Is it possible to apply the brake feature on command or is it just used during startup as a means of handling if the motor spinning in reverse? It looks like the brake can be applied at anytime through the BrkDoneThr register, but I'd like to verify.

Also, what happens when the MotorSpeed on the device is set to 0? Does the chip go to sleep and the motor spins down due to friction?

Thanks for the help

-Tyler

  • Hi Tyler,

The Brake function will activate any time you give the device a speed that is significantly less than the previous speed. So if you apply a speed command of 300 then apply a speed command of 0 the DRV10983-Q1 will use the brake function to stop the motor.

    Regards,

    Michael

  • Hi Michael,

    Thanks for the quick response.

    Two Follow up Questions

    • You said "significant"...Is there some specific threshold value?
    • If you give it a speed of 300 and then a speed of 200, will it apply the break until the motor hits 200?

  • Hi Tyler,

After talking to my team, I did not give the most clear explanation on the "brake" function of the device. The "Brake" function is only on start up. The motor will never "Brake" the motor from going between two speeds.

If you want to slow the motor quickly there are two things you can do.

One is enable the Mechanical AVS this should help slow decelerate the motor when going between two speeds. Please check out section 8.4.9.1 of the datasheet.

The other is if your motor is running and you want to stop your motor quickly you can do this using the Inductive AVS. This will turn on all the low side fets slowing the motor. You can read more information about this in section 8.4.9.2 of the datasheet.
