DRV8353R: Smart gate driver's isolation

Part Number: DRV8353R

I'd  like to know why most of  smart gate drivers (if not all) aren't isolated. How we ensure that the micro controller signal's ground isnt connected to the power circuit's ground ?

As the normal isolated gate drivers use isolation (ex. The UCC2150 isolated half bridge gate driver or the Optocouplers  send optical signals).

  • Muhannad,

Thanks for posting on the MD forum!

We do not isolate the gate driver (DRV IC) from the power stage (FET bridge) because we need to closely monitor the drain to source voltages for both the high side and low side FET as well as the motor switch node (SHx). This being said you can place isolators between the MCU and the DRV if you are concerned about this. It is not essential that the power stage and DRV are hard connected to the MCU as long as the input signals and fault signals for the DRV have the correct signal integrity.

  • Isn't it necessary to isolate the MCU signal which goes to the DRV? Most if not all the application notes doesn't isolate the MCU signal which goes to the smart gate driver.

  • Muhannad,

In a system it may be necessary but we do not isolate the MCU from the DRV on the EVM.
