DRV8835: DRV8835 for electromagnetic relay control IM01GR

Part Number: DRV8835
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV777, L293D

Hello. Can you tell me if it is possible to use DRV8835 to control the  relay im01gr (AXICOM) relay coils? Or do TI have better options?
It is necessary to switch the relay to different States with short pulses at short intervals.

DRV8835 3.3 V (TTL) control from the microcontroller.

  • Hi Maksim,

The DRV8835 can be used to control the coils, but other options are available assuming you intend to drive more than one relay.

One alternative is the DRV777, which can control up to 7 devices using low side only.

Thank you for the answer, DRV777 is not suitable, because you need to change the polarity of the relay control signal.

Tell me - do I need to put additional protective diodes on the pins AOUT1, aout1 and BOUT1, BOUT12 ( DRV8835 ), as implemented in L293D, or are there enough internal diodes? So for the relay coil up to 100 mA. If so, what kind of diodes do you recommend?

  • Hi Maksim,

The datasheet of the im01gr states the relay is non-latching. If this is the case, you should not need to change polarity. Please confirm that you are using a latching relay or have some other requirement to switch polarity.

How many relays are you controlling?  The DRV777 can control latching relays with the addition of a few external components. There is slightly more power consumption when energizing the relay.

The DRV8835 does not require protective diodes on the outputs. The diodes are a built into the FETs. This is shown in the Functional Block Diagram of the datasheet.

  • Hi Maksim,

Please refer to the post https://e2e.ti.com/support/motor-drivers/f/38/t/418573?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=latching%2525252520AND%2525252520relay as an example of how the DRV777 and external resistors could be used.

The resistors in Figure 1 of the post should be 4.7 Ohm on both sides, and can be adjusted to meet your system requirements.

  • Спасибо за совет, я планирую использовать 2 реле, и думаю  DRV8835  будет самым оптимальным вариантом.

Thanks for the advice, I plan to use 2 relays, and I think DRV8835 will be the best option.

  • Hi Maksim,

Thank you for the details. The DRV8835 is the best option for 2 relays.
