DRV8874: PH/EN mode vs PWM mode if using 100% duty cycle and fixed off-time chopping

Part Number: DRV8874

Hello,

Is there any practical difference between PH/EN mode and PWM mode if using 100% duty cycle and fixed off-time chopping? Our first use of the DRV8874 requires 100% duty cycle which would imply PH/EN mode at first glance of the datasheet, but it seems like 100% duty can also be achieved in PWM mode if fixed off-time chopping is used.

Am I missing anything in my assumptions?

  • Hi Andrew,

Both Operation modes can be utilized as per your requirements.

The benefit of using PWM Control Mode is: it allows for the H-bridge to enter the Hi-Z state without taking the nSLEEP pin logic low.

The benefit of using PH/EN Control Mode is: it allows for the H-bridge to be controlled with a speed and direction type of interface; one PWM signal (EN) and one GPIO signal (PH).
