DRV8353RS-EVM: Need possible causes for GDUV bit fault status

Hi,

This is 2nd time am facing GDUV fault and cannot understand the reason.

DRV chip is configured via SPI with 1x PWM and everything has left the default

I could run the motor with no issues using HALL sensors connected, but it runs just for a while later I see FAULT led lit up

Really I do not understand what causes the fault, please give me all possible reasons for GDUV fault status

Thanks for posting on the MD forum!

Did you modify the EVM or firmware? By default the hall sensors are not used in the hardware and software as the EVM ships.

Hi Adam,

I am using my own MCU to communicate and control DRV8353 chip

I could change to 1x PWM mode via SPI (all other settings as default) and tried driving the motor with 1Khz PWM frequency, within few seconds fault LED turned ON with GDUV bit set in the FAULT status register

Does the device fault recover if you reset the system?

Which IDRIVE setting are you programming?

Chandra,

The FETs on the EVM have a very small Qgd and as a result only need the minimum IDRIVE settings to switch effectively. When the IDRIVE is at the default setting (maximum IDRIVE) the FETs are switched too fast and likely overshoot/undershoot is happening at the gate and switch nodes. This is likely the cause of the charge pump damage.

Please use a new DRV device and program the IDRIVE for the minimum setting and check if the issue still occurs.
