DRV8340-Q1: Device Lifetime when Operating from 48V Supply

Part Number: DRV8340-Q1

Hi,

My customer is concerned about the lifetime impact from powering their DRV8340-Q1 from a 48V source based on footnote #2 (page 8 of DS) mentioning 24V systems. I interpret the footnote as below. Can you please confirm if it is correct and if there is a lifetime impact when operating at nominal voltages close to 50V?:

Footnote #2 is just specifying that the electrical characteristics table is valid for up to 60V transients, but the device is intended for use up to 50V continuous. The 5.5V to 50V specification covers the voltage ranges for most applications powered directly from a 12V or 24V automotive battery, but you can also power from a regulated source that will not exceed 50V continuous.

Thanks,

Antonio

  • Hi Antonio,

It should be okay to operate continuously at voltages up to 50V, however, as you pointed out, the DRV834x is intended for use in 12V or 24V automotive systems. It is not recommended to use this system in a 48V automotive systems, as even under normal operating conditions, a 48V automotive battery is expected to run as high as 52V indefinitely.

    Thanks,

    Garrett
