Want to design 48v BLDC motor driver power by solar

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5122

hello,

I want to run 48V / 2.1A, BLDC motor but I am not able to find driver IC for my suitable range.

source input is: 12 - 36VDC / 10A Solar power or 24V DC Batteries.

Load Output: 48V / 2.1A , BLDC Motor.

I want a Driver IC which Buck/Boost the power at the same time it will charge the batteries.

  • Hi Nitesh,

Thank you for reaching out.  You may consider LM5122 boost. Refer to the following ref design which is close to your operating conditions.

    Thanks,

  • Hello .

your supported design is Perfect for me, Thanks for your support but I have few queries.

    1) Is it necessary to design a four-layer PCB..?

    2) can I change the size of the inductor or different bobbins,.?

    3) MOSFET used in the suggested design is BSC072N08NS5ATMA1, can I use different MOSFET with the To-220 package.?, if yes please suggest me part number and brand, so I can make a more cost-effective design.

  • HELLO,

    In the suggested Design

output voltage is 54V but I need 48V output

output current is 2.5A but I need 5A output

What should I change in the design, for these two changes?

    please Notify me,....

  • You said you need 2.1A load in your original post.  So this 2.5A should cover your application.

To adjust the Vout to 48V, you need to raise R18 slightly.  Please follow the datasheet for the FB resistor divider selection formula. Please change R18.

I would recommend a 4 layer PCB. You can change the inductor, but you need to make sure the selected inductor meet your applications. Datasheet has inductor selection guidelines.  You can also change the MOSFETs.

To simplify your design, choose the inductor and FETs which have similar electrical parameters:  Inductance, Isat, Rdc,  MOSFET voltage and current rating, Rds(ON) and Qg_total.  Then  you should get similar performance to the ref design.

    Thanks,

    Youhao

  • Hello .

Yes,  I said 2.1A output current in my original post but I wish to change output current by 5A Load.

what are the necessary things to change in the circuit?

If Inductor value needs to be changed, then what will be the preferable value?

there are two kinds of Inductors. (L1: SER2915H-103KL), (L2: XAL4020-102MEB)

.in which inductor changes to be maid and what are the changes?

Thank you for your Constant support,...

I am Little closer to my final design

  • If you want 5A load current, use the following ref which is closer to your application. You just need to adjust the low side resistor at the FB pin to correct the output voltage to 48V.

    Thanks,

    Youhao

  • Hi Nitesh,

Thank you for hitting the Resolved button. Really appreciated for the confirmation.

    Good luck!

  • Hello Youhao Xi,

You have suggested a design for 48V, 2.5A DC-DC boost converter in my original post.

    https://www.ti.com/tool/PMP21274

I have a little bit confused about capacitors which are set in BOM,

    C2,C3,C4,C5,C6,C7,C8, These all capacitors are SMD 1210, 4.7uF, 80V, X7R, 10%, by (Murata Electronics : GRM32ER71K475KE14L)

Q.) Instead of the above SMD capacitor, can I use a through-hole electrolytic capacitor of 4.7uF, 80V, 10%, 105 degrees, 10000 Hrs Life span?

SMD part is going to increase the cost of the Evaluation board and it is not easily available in India.

Please suggest the alternate as soon as possible

    thank you

  • Hi Nitesh,

SMT devices can reduce the cost for mass production, but if you wish to use through holes, you can.  However, make sure your electrolytic meet the ripple current requirement.  Choose low ESR electrolytic (make sure you check the datasheet for EST at 100kHz), like the ploymer type, then your design should be okay.

    Thanks,

    Youhao

  • Thank you,

I will make sure all point, which you noted.
