DRV8889-Q1: Is it possible to control a solenoid with a stepper motor driver

Part Number: DRV8889-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8436E

We have a board that controls stepper motors (linear actuators) with DRV8889 stepper motor drivers.

We'd like to investigate using solenoid valves instead of stepper motors.

Is it possible to control a solenoid with a stepper motor driver?

  • Hi Artsiom,

It may be possible to control solenoids with the DRV8889, but there are device that may work better.

Using a DRV8889 to control solenoids means the STEP/DIR pin need to be used to control the solenoids. It may not be possible to control more than one solenoid.

And there could be other unexpected control issues.

Please consider the DRV8436E or DRV8436P as alternatives.

  • Thanks, Rick.

This is just to test the concept with our current electronics, once that is successful we'll redesign it with proper solenoid drivers.
