DRV8876: DRV Part Comparison

Hi there,

My team is interested in utilizing one of the following parts:

DRV8801

DRV8801A-Q1

DRV8801-Q1

DRV8816

DRV8874

DRV8876

It seems that all parts meet our required specs. Besides the voltage / current ratings / need for external shunt, what is the difference and what would you reccomend?

A little about our application:

- 2.1A max, 26V system

    The Q1 parts are automotive rated so if your design is not automotive I suggest looking at the non-Q1 parts.

    The 8801 only supports Phase/Enable control mode and no internal current sense or current sense amplifier. The specs are: Vmin=8V; Vmax=38V; Imax(peak)=3A

    The 8816 supports independent 1/2 bridge and PWM control mode. The 8816 also has an internal current sense amplifier. The specs are: Vmin=8V; Vmax=38V; Imax(peak)=3A

    The 8876, which has the lowest 1ku price compared to the others in your list, can support independent 1/2 bridge, PWM, and PH/EN control mode.  The specs are: Vmin=4.5V; Vmax=37V; Imax(peak)=3.5A

    The 8874 is similar to the 8876 but has lower RDSon allowing for maximum output current. The specs are: Vmin=4.5V; Vmax=37V; Imax(peak)=6A.

    I recommend the 8876 since it has multiple control modes, integrated current sensing, good amount of protection features, and falls within your application requirements (assuming 2.1 A is maximum peak current).

    Additionally, how do these parts compare to the DRV8816 and DRV8874 / DRV8876?

    The DRV8801 provides the option to monitor the current through the motor winding by measuring a proportional voltage through a sense resistor. Below is a screenshot o f the datasheet. 

    Aside from being automotive rated, the DRV8801A-Q1 has a Vmin=6.5V, Vmax=36V, and Imax(peak)=2.8A. The DRV8801A-Q1 has an operating ambient temperature of -40C to 125C compared to the DRV8801 which has an operating ambient temperature of -40C to 85C. 

    The DRV8801 and DRV8801A-Q1 only support PH/EN control mode while the DRV8874 and DRV8876 support Independent 1/2-Bridge, PH/EN, PWM. The 8874 and 8876 have integrated current sense using current mirror architecture that removes the need for bulky external power sense resistors. The current mirror technology also allows for continuous current monitoring both during the drive and decay stages unlike the traditional current sense implemented in the DRV8801 and DRV8801A-Q1 which only monitors current during the drive stage.

    Sorry to correct you but the DRV8001 actually has an internal current sense amplifier which provides an output for reading by an  MCU.

    Great, for the DRV8801A-Q1, it is like the DRV8801 but rated for automotive applications, a wider voltage range, and able to withstand higher temperatures.

    How about the DRV8816? Where does it fit in? 

    Are you recommending the DRV8874 solely based on the fact that it has an internal shunt resistor?

    I want to correct a statement I made in my first reply. I mentioned that the DRV8876 had the cheapest 1ku price from the list but that's not the case. The DRV8801 and DRV8816 both have the lowest 1ku price.

    The DRV8816 has the same Vmin, Vmax, peak output current, and RDSon as the DRV8801. The DRV8816 uses independent 1/2 bridge mode and PWM mode. The DRV8816 also has a dedicated current-proportional output pin (VPROPI) which is approximately 5x the voltage in the sense resistor. 

    I recommended the DRV8876 (not the DRV8874) mainly because it provides with more safety features and control modes as compared to the others in your list. If you do not need all the features in your application, then I suggest either the DRV8801 or the DRV8816 depending on what control modes you are interested in. If you just need PH/EN, then I suggest the DRV8801. But if you need independent 1/2 bridge control or PWM, then I suggest the DRV8816. Both the DRV8801 and DRV8816 have the same 1ku price.

    Why would you not recommend the DRV8874? Is the only difference between the 74 and 76 the RDSon and current rating?

    That's right, the DRV8874 has higher current rating but I recommend the DRV8876 because it has a peak current rating of 3.5A which is within the specs of your application. You can choose the DRV8874 if your application will require more than 3.5A.
