WEBENCH® Tools/DRV8306: high speed motor using DRV8306

Part Number: DRV8306

Tool/software: WEBENCH® Design Tools

Hi,

I want  to order DRV8306  evaluation board to run BLDC motor. before that just have few questions related to it.

1. can this board is capable to run BDLC motor at high speed around 55k rpm.

2. what is its currently capability of driver .

Regards,

Sayali

  • Sayali,

Do you have a motor selected for this 55kRPM? If so could you please share the datasheet?

Please note that this DRV is open loop only but you can make it closed loop by using FGOUT and your MCU. The MCU will need to parse FGOUT and control the DRV inputs so that the loop is closed.

The DRV8306 can accept up to 30kHz hall sensor frequency. To calculate the hall sensor frequency relative to the number of motor pole pairs and RPM, use this equation:

F = N*RPM/60 (F in Hz, N is pairs of poles, RPM is revs per minute).

Since this device uses external FETs to drive the motor, the current capability is limited by the external FETs, not the DRV. The DRV itself can drive up to 150/300mA on the gates source/sink.

  • Hi Adam,

        Thank you for details,

we want to run motor in open loop mode only.As requested by you below is spec of out motor. it is 2 pole.

    regards,

    Sayali

  • Sayali,

With the DRV8306 you should be able to run the motor at the rated no load speed of 51.6kRPM.

The assumption here is that the DRV8306 has enough voltage to drive the BEMF of the mentioned motor and it can read the hall sensors at less than 30kHz.
