DRV8320: DRV8320 Sensorless Direction Controll

Part Number: DRV8320
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV832X,

Hello,

We are using sensorless motor in our project. we want to use sensorless and 1xPWM Mode. Can we change motor direction with INHC pin?

Thank You

Murat

8.3.1.1.3 1x PWM Mode (PWM_MODE = 10b or MODE Pin = Hi-Z)

The INHC input controls the direction through the 6-step commutation table which is used to change the direction
of the motor when Hall effect sensors are directly controlling the state of the INLA, INHB, and INLB inputs. Tie
the INHC pin low if this feature is not required.

  • Hi Murat,

Thanks for posting to the MD forum!

In order to spin the motor using 1x PWM mode, the DRV832x depends on hall sensor inputs into INLA, INHB, and INLB in order to use the DIR pin. The DIR pin only changes the commutation table logic in the device, so with a sensorless motor there would be no position feedback directly to the DRV832x device and make the DIR pin irrelevant.

To use a sensorless motor, I would recommend using the DRV8323S or DRV8323RS because those devices have internal CSAs that you can use for closed loop current feedback to calculate and determine the position of the motor. If you are using the DRV8320, it does not include the current shunt amplifiers and would require external CSAs in order to implement current feedback.
