High Side driving of Largely Inductive Loads

Dear Responsible;

For our new development i am looking for high side driving of a largely inductive load solution.

Approximate load inductance is ~100mH with only 11R internal resistance and our customer requires fast demagnetization during turn-off.

By the way we need to monitor load current and voltage continously that can be easily handled.

Could you pls recommend me an adequate solution?

Hello Ilhan,

I would recommend using the TPS1H100-Q1. in your case, the maximum current would be 3 A. In figure 34 of the datasheet you can see the maximum current vs. the inductance.

First of all thank you for your reply.

I was considering TPS1HB35-Q1 or P2P alternates. With our 18V~30V system and considering temperature effect over copper I think our current limit value should be >=4A.

By the way TPS1HB35-Q1 has up to 28V extended supply and 36V abs rating. What is your opinion? Does this selection cause suspicious design?

Last thing, what about a discrete solution with external FET, which P/N do you recommend from TI? (like LM5069, etc. it does not seem to be an adequate solution for inductive loads-due to negative voltage on the OUT sense pin!)

Finally demagnetization time should be <5msec, could you pls recommend me some technical tips?

Hello Ilhan,

For the TPSxHBxx family we do not recommend operating in the extended operation range at DC steady state conditions due to short circuit protection not being guaranteed. I will loop in the right engineer for LM5069.

Hello Ilhan,

While driving inductive loads with LM5069, a schottky diode is required across the LM5069’s output to provide freewheeling path for the load current when the LM5069 shuts off. Please refer 11.1.2 System Considerations in LM5069 datasheet.
