DRV8835: Questions

Part Number: DRV8835

Hi team, I have a customer with the following questions:

We are looking into design in DRV8835 motor control IC into our applicaion we had studied the datasheet and have few questions / concerns:

  1. We are also considering the switch the VCC on and off to enter the sleep mode, so what is the wake time I need to consider?
  2. Bilk capacitor size and voltage?  Please let me know other information you’ll need to help us with the input bilk capacitor capacitance and cap voltage.   Our motors are powered by a 2S1P li-poly 300mAh battery pack.  The peak current of the motor is around 4A for the duration of 100msec and nominal current is around 1A-2A for 1sec at most.

I can share a schematic snip over email if desired.

Thanks!

  • Hi Will,

The answer to your questions are below:

    1. You need to consider the wake up time of the device. For this device, the wake up time is around 30us.
    2. The capacitor voltage rating should be around 2-3 times the nominal power supply voltage. In your case, you are using 2S1P battery pack which has a nominal voltage of around 7.4V. So the bulk capacitor should be rated for 16V-20V. As for the capacitor value, I recommend a 100uF capacitor. However, because of the short 4A duration, you can even choose a 47uF to save BOM cost.
