BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM: Can I use this driver instead of DRV8320EVM?

Part Number: BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8320, DRV8305, , LAUNCHXL-F28027F, DRV8323, MOTORWARE

I want to use F280049C launchpad for motor control with instaspin-foc and design drive libraries. However, there are examples for F280049C and boostxl-drv8320. When I looked drv8320 and drv8305 evm documents, they are very similar. I already have a boostxl-drv8305evm and I want to use it. Consequently, can I use drv8305-evm with f280049c?

  • Hello Ismail,

Is the interest more about FOC or specifically the F280049C with FOC?

    Compatibility between F280049C and DRV8305EVM:

TI's strategy with the DRV83x series to offer a launch pad format for the EVM which comes with a partner MCU or Processor. In the case of the DRV8323, that's the F280049C. In the case of the DRV8305EVM, it is the LAUNCHXL-F28027F.

So, if any user wants to deviate from this intro (which expect them to do eventually), we expect the user to start writing their own code which means you'll asking the C2k team about adapting the peripherals of the F280049C to work with motorware and the DRVx. To get to this step, we expect the user to know which peripherals are needed and what signals are important from the DRV8305.

For the DRV8305 we have a diagram in the user guide to help you. These should show the general "ADC input", "Power signal", or "GPIO" to signify what signals should go to what peripheral:

If you have any questions about the DRV8305 signals, we'd be happy to help. Otherwise, you might need to ask the C2k team about adapting FOC to this new processor. So it is possible, it will just take work.

    DRV8305EVM and F28027F with FOC

If you just want FOC, in general, you might as well try instructions in the user guide by connecting Motorware to with the F28027F and the DRV8305EVM (assuming you already have that launchpad).

    Best,
