DRV8353R: Driving Switched Reluctance Motor with DRV8353R

Part Number: DRV8353R
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8343-Q1, DRV8353

Hello Sir/Madam,

We are currently designing a motor driver for BLDC motor with using DRV8353R motor driver IC. In the future, we will work on Switched Reluctance Motor.

There is an article about how to drive SRM with DRV8343-Q1. In this article, there is DLA pin, it is connected to the low-side MOSFET's drain. But there is no DLA pin at DRV8353 motor driiver IC. www.ti.com/.../slvaen9.pdf

When we researched driving SRM on e2e forum, we have found this thread which is saying it can be used to drive SRM with DRV8353 motor driver IC. e2e.ti.com/.../885202

So can our BLDC motor driver with DRV8353 drive Switched Reluctance Motor even ther is no DLA pin? I will be appreciate for all of your help .

Thanks in advance.

Kind Regards,

Yasin Turk

  • Hello Yasin,

The DLx pin only adds additional protection, specifically in the supply to phase short condition.

So, from a motor drive standpoint, the DLx pin is not needed to drive a SRM. From a protection standpoint, DLx offers an additional protection feature not offered in the DRV8353.

    Best,

  • Hello Cole,

Thank you for your answer. I have one more question. With DRV8353, I can drive 3-phase BLDC motor placing high-side low-side power stage. But, SRM is different from BLDC. Is there an any application note about inverter stage of SRM or how to drive SRM?

    Kind Regards,

  • Hello Yasin Turk,

You can try and look at this App note: https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slvaen9/slvaen9.pdf

It is not the DRV8353, but the DRV8343-Q1 is close enough where enough features and the design is applicable. In general, the SRM needs a diode an a MOSFET instead of the half H bridge design for the 3 phase BLDC. At the end of the day, driving the gate's of MOSFETs is what needs to be done, which is what the DRV8353 can do.

If you're asking about control algorithms, I suggest you look elsewhere as TI doesn't sell algorithms, unless we developed it and it comes integrated or bundle with a specific family of parts (as you noted, we only really have those for 3 phase BLDCs). Because the DRV8353 is a gate driver, and is meant to be algorithm agnostic, its up to you to implement an algorithm that makes sense.

    Best,

    -Cole
