DRV8308EVM: Clock Frequency Mode

Part Number: DRV8308EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8308

Hello,

As part of the development of a brushless motor driver board, we are testing the DRV8308EVM board.

We are currently encountering a problem relating to the use of the "Clock Frequency Mode", it must be activated in the "All Registers" tab by changing the SPDMODE register to "0", however it refuses to change status and always remains fixed at the value "1" in this case the PWM Mode (see attached image).

Can you please tell us what to do to manage this setting on your DRV8308 GUI application?

In addition, we have installed the following software version on our computers: GUIComposerApp-0.1.0.setup-win_2.0.4 (GUI_installer) .exe and we do not want to go through the online interface.

Thank you !

Best Regard,

  • Hello Aimen,

Does clicking on the clock frequency mode tab change the dial on the left hand side so it says CLK_IN frequency from MCU? When clicking the tab, it is supposed to write that register to CLK_IN mode.

You can always navigate to the online version and download a local copy of the GUI for offline use. Use the the little download arrow on the DRV8308 GUI card: https://dev.ti.com/gallery/search/drv8308

I will say that the online version is the only "supported" (read: most stable) version of GUI for the DRV8308 and the bundled version is known to have bugs that are lost to the age of this device. I would highly recommend you download the online version.

  • Hello Cole,

First of all I would like to thank you for your response.

I manage to change the CLK_IN frequency of the MCU By clicking on the “clock frequency mode” tab, on the other hand the "clock frequency mode" remains inactive. To switch it to active the SPDMODE register must switch to " 0 ” however it refuses to change status. In my case, it's the PWM Mode that stays on all the time.

Otherwise, I have already tested the online version with which I managed to make my motor work in "clock frequency mode", however it is limited in frequency to 100Hz while the offline version can reach 5000Hz.

Do you have any other online solution which can support more frequency (speed)

    Thank you !

  • Hello Aimen,

CLK IN Mode with newer GUI

Yes, the MSP FW changed for the online version so you would need to switch the clock source from the MSP to an External clock source (disconnect P5 and supply an external PWM generator and go up to whatever frequency you want).

Also, I might be reading into this too much, were you asking for other devices that might be able to provide what you're looking for?

    Best,

    -Cole

  • Hello Cole,
