DRV8711: layout and bulk capacitor location

Part Number: DRV8711

Hello,

The layout guidelines from the DRV8711 datasheet (10.1 paragraph), explains that the bulk electrolytic capacitor should be located close to the DRV8711.

In a layout where the power MOSFETs are not located just beside the DRV8711, is it better to set the bulk capacitor before (in the current pass) the driver as mentioned in the datasheet? Or after the driver and beside the MOSFETs as shown below, at the alternative bulk capacitor position?

Most of the current is consumed at the MOSFETs side and maybe this is where the capacitor contribution is most needed?

Best regards

  • Hi REMI,

If the VM of the DRV8711 and the power supply of the H-bridge come from the same main power supply, you can place the bulk capacitor near the H-bridge FETs as long as it is not too far away from the DRV8711 IC. I suggest watching this training video on PCB layout guidelines and this appnote of the same name to learn more about PCB layout guidelines for motor drivers.
