DRV8704EVM: MSP430 to control DRV8704EVM

Part Number: DRV8704EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F5529, , MSP-EXP430G2ET

Hello,

In a previous thread the MSP-EXP430GSET was suggested for use with the DRV8704EVM. I came across the MSP430F5529 which also has the launchpad headers, will this work as well?

What is the difference between MSP-EXP430GSET and MSP430F5529?

  • Hi Michael,

Thank you for posting to the motor drivers forum.

The main difference between the two launchpads is the MCU. The MSP430F5529 LaunchPad contains the MSP430F5529 MCU and the MSP-EXP430G2ET can support MSP430G2xx2, MSP430G2xx3, and MSP430F20xx devices. The MSP-EXP430G2ET is recommended to use with the DRV8704EVM because the launchpad is simpler and can provide the necessary I/O pins needed to control the motor driver. The MSP430F5529 has a lot more header I/O pins.

You can use the MSP430F5529 with the DRV8704EVM. Just make sure that the appropriate pins from the launch pad connects to the header pins of the DRV8704EVM. For example, you want the AINx and BINx to connect to a Timer pin on the launchpad that is capable of producing a PWM signal. If the pins don't align perfectly with the header on the EVM, you can manually connect it using jumper wires.
