DRV8305: SPI interface not available

Part Number: DRV8305
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8320

HI,

We have selected gate driver IC DRV8305 for BLDC motor driver application. We don't have feasibility of using SPI interface to communicate gate driver with MCU. I believe this gate driver will work without SPI communication also. Can you please confirm the same?

How to configure the parameters of the gate driver without SPI? Example: if we want to configure "High-side peak source current" to 1A, how to do this without SPI?

Appreciate your prompt response.

Thanks,

  • Hello Jeyaprakash,

Its not recommended to use this device without SPI. You cannot change any of the register settings or feature behavior without SPI which means you'd have to verify that every default setting would work for your application. Otherwise, this device will not work for you and you should consider looking at a different device.

As such, it sounds like you would greatly benefit from the "H" variant of the DRV8320. The important configurable parameters like IDRIVE and VDS levels, are set using resistors attached to pins of the device (which go and set the register settings). I would highly recommend the DRV8320H instead of the DRV8305 as it is newer, better documented, has more features, and available in a smaller package.

    Best,
