DRV8308EVM: Position control on GUI

Part Number: DRV8308EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320F28379D, DRV8308, DRV832X, DRV8320, DRV8323

Hi Team,

This is costumer request can you please advise here:

"

Thanks again for the DRV8308EVM module. We run the module. We checked the TelcoMotion motor speed in the set.

But the driver has no setting on the position control gui. Also, we cannot drive the DRV8308EVM module from the pwm outputs via the tms320f28379d launchpad.

Our motor that we will use in our project has 28vdc, peak current: 11.6 A max values and it is a Brushless AC servomotor.

Do we have an interface where we can input position control and PWM signals with an external encoder in our own motor using DRV8308EVM module?

If not, is there any other engine driver you can recommend?

"

Thanks in advance

Best Regards

  • Hello Furkan,

If the customer wants control of the MOSFET gates by using PWM inputs, then that means they want control to be external to the DRV device. As such, the DRV8308 has the control integrated, and specifically, not position control, so the DRV8308 is not the right device.

They should look into the DRV832x family as it is a gate driver where up to 6 MOSFET gates can be controlled. Then, they'll need need an algorithm to interpret the encoder outputs and change the PWM exposed to the MOSFET gates. These signals go to the DRV832x device (INx pins) which then go to the gates of the FETs (GHx and GLx).

Small tip about the DRV832x family, DRV8323 means 3 current sense amps are integrated and DRV8320 means no current sense amplifiers integrated.

    Best,
