DRV8306: Verification of charge pump capacitor

Part Number: DRV8306

Hi,

We are designing a new product using DRV8306HRSMT. I have some questions regarding the charge pump capacitor.

1. In section 10.1 of the datasheet, it says "This capacitor should be 47 nF" relating the to charge pump cap, whereas everywhere else this is referred to as 22nF. Is this 47nF is a typo?

2. Assuming it is 22nF, can I use two 10nF caps in parallel for charge pump cap?

Thanks,

Kaushalya

  • Hello Kaushalya,

    Thanks for your question.

    1. Section 10.1 is incorrect - the proper size of this capacitor is 22nF, not 47nF.
    2. You may use 2x 10nF capacitors in parallel instead of 22nF (this is only 10% difference in value). The rating of this capacitor must be the same as your VM capacitor (typically 2x the supply voltage). Please make sure that the capacitors are placed very close together and very close to the DRV8306 because excessive trace inductance in this path will have negative consequences for the charge pump. Ideally, the DRV8306 and charge pump capacitors should both be on the same layer of the board (to not require vias in the traces).

    Thanks,

    Matt
