DRV8320: Estimate of power dissipation?

Part Number: DRV8320

Hello Team,

our customer would like to use the DRV8320HRTVR, but they were wondering if we have some calculators / tools / graphs that help to understand what the power dissipation will be - depending on some design parameters like switching frequenty, bus voltage and gate charge.

Thanks and best regards
Martin

  • Hello Martin,

We do not have a calculator available but the calculation can be rather straightforward - at least for a first order approximation:

    • Supply current: PVM = VM*IVM (IVM = 10.5mA typ)

    • DVDD LDO: Is there any current being sourced from the DVDD pin to other circuits on the board? If so, PDVDD = (VM – 3.3V) * Iout

    • Charge Pump: PCP = (N) * (Qg * fPWM) * (VM-VGSH), N = number of HS MOSFETs switching per cycle (N = 1 for trap, N = 3 for sine/FOC). VGSH is typically 11V.

    • Low-side GLx LDO: PGLx = (N) * (Qg * fPWM) * (VM-VGSL). VGSL is typically 11V.

    Thanks,

    Matt

  • Thanks for the reply & the equations, Matt!

    Best Regards
    Martin
