BOOST-DRV8848: boost-drv8848 booster pack with TMS320F28379D board

Part Number: BOOST-DRV8848
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320F28379D, DRV8848, LAUNCHXL-F28379D, MSP430G2553

Hi Team,

Greetings. Customer's need to communicate the boost-drv8848 booster pack with TMS320F28379D board. Below is the full inquiry.

I have the boost-drv8848 booster pack and I am using it with the TMS320F28379D board. I was wondering how I can program it to turn on the motors basically I just need to figure out how to communicate to the drv8848 to control the speed of the motor. My partner and I are planning on using Simulink to program the board if that means anything for you.

Is there any pin layout diagrams for the DRV8848? Something that shows what pins on the board are connected with the Ain1 Ain2 Bin1 Bin2. If I can see what GPIO pins are connected with those, then I should be able to handle mostly what I need. In addition, are there any pin layouts for the encoder pins? What pins connected with A+ A- B+ B- Z+ Z- +5V GND. This would be very helpful.

Looking forward to your response. Thank you so much.

Best regards,

Jonathan

  • Jonathan,

    In https://www.ti.com/lit/zip/slvc606 "board files" folder, the schematic and layout shows the Ain1 Ain2 Bin1 Bin2 pin connections. But, I don't find the A+ A- B+ B- Z+ Z- +5V and encoder pin.  Where do you see the "A+ A- B+ B- Z+ Z- +5V"?

BTW, the user's guide may help. https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slvuae1/slvuae1.pdf

  • Jonathan,

Hope you have resolved the issue. You can reopen the thread by posting your update.

  • Hi Wang,

Greetings! Sorry for the delayed response. As per our customer, the encoder cables has the A+ A- B+ B- etc.

The TMS320F28379D board has encoder hook ups. there are 5 pins per encoder. I cannot find a pin diagram for the encoder hook ups. We have two quadrature encoders to hook into the board, but we do not know how because we can not find a pin diagram on a data sheet. For the Boost DRV 8848, we cannot get the H bridges to open so voltage can flow to the motors. I have the pin layout, and we are giving the board a 100% duty cycle on pin Bin1 and nothing on pin Bin2 so the motor on the Bout will turn CW. However, the H bridge is not working and we do not know why.

    Best regards,

    Jonathan

  • Jonathan,

TI has many EVMs, reference designs. Would you post the board document link here?

  • Hi Wang,

    Greetings!

We are having two different problems. The first is we cannot find a pin layout for the "Dual 5V Quadrature Interfaces"." This problem relates to the LAUNCHXL-F28379D Board.

The second problem is getting the BOOST DRV8848 to turn on the motors while attached to the LAUNCHXL-F28379D Board. It cannot download the firmware/flash on CCS because it has the "The program generated by BOOST-DRV8848_FIRMWARv1.0 is not compatible with any of the CPUs in your target configuration" issue.

We hope this helps to clear things up.

Thanks in advance for the response.

    Best regards.

    Jonathan

  • Jonathan,

In the BOOST-DRV8848 EVM folder page ( www.ti.com/.../BOOST-DRV8848 ): This kit was designed to be compatible with all TI LaunchPads following the LaunchPad Pinout Standard, with primary software/firmware support being provided for the MSP-EXP430G2 LaunchPad with a MSP430G2553.

We need MSP430G2 launchpad, not LAUNCHXL-F28379D Board. According to your description, LAUNCHXL-F28379D doesn't support MSP430G2553 function.

BTW, LaunchPad expert is not on this forum.
