DRV110: power driver

Part Number: DRV110

Hello,

I am interested for the application of the integrated circuit DRV110, for regulating the excitation current of a small DC generator with independent excitation. The supply voltage of the excitation winding is 110Vdc, ohmic resistance Rw=100 ohm, inductance Lw = 1H, nominal current 1.1A.  The range of excitation current is from 0.2A to 1A. The excitation current should be controlled by a control voltage of 0-10V from the PLC. Is it possible to achieve this type of control via the Reak and (or) Rhold input of this IC??.

Best regards!!!

  • Hi,

Thank you for your interest in DRV110. DRV110 is external FET drive solution therefore 0.2A to 1A is OK if you pick FET to drive them.

To set peak and hold current level, please refer Datasheet page 11. You may need to chose a little smaller than 1ohm(e.g 0.5ohm) for RSENSE to have 1A. Page 11 shows example of 1ohm.

  • Hi Shinya,

Thanks a lot for this informations.

As far as I understand, if at Rsense = 0.5 ohm, I set that Rpeak = Rhold= 123k,  then I will get that Ipeak = Ihold = 1A; In this way I will get a current of 1A at the output (i.e. on the R-L load).I want to control  the output current in the 0-1A range via voltage input signal 0-10V (from PLC).

Is it possible the  voltage control of the output current via input pins  PEAK and HOLD, i.e. current control by voltage input signal 0-10V???

    Thank You in advance!!

    Best regards!!!

  • Hi,

I did not calculate but Rpeak 123K + 0.5ohm Rsense should have ~1A Peak current and hold current ~160mA. Please refer datasheet page11 Fig4. It is graph of Rsense=1ohm. If you use 0.5ohm, peak and hold current will be doubled.

DRV110 is not designed to control current by external voltage input, just designed to set Peak and Hond with Rpeak/Rhold. However this link is gimmick to control current level externally. This is optional and not accurate control function so I recommend you to use small step control (e.g 2-4 steps) only.

    regards
