DRV8711: Application inquiry

Part Number: DRV8711
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8834,

Hello Team,

My customer is using the device DRV8834 in his project. With the limitation of space and heat generated, they wanted to use the device DRV8711 as a replacement. However, they wanted to know about using back EMF in the DRV8711 and its auto-mixed decay to decrease the heat in the system. And also if a resistor divider circuit with a Zener diode is a way to decrease the PWM signals to the drive voltage they need is a better solution.

Regards,

Renan

  • Renan,

Can you please let me know the specifications of the design?  Voltage range?  Current requirements?  Any other specific requirements?

We have some great, new integrated devices that can push to a lot higher currents than the DRV8834.

With the information above, I can better direct your customer.

  • Hello Ryan,

They gave me limited infomation for this. They are looking for a 3V max signal and trying to drive a SM3.4-F20 step motor. There's very limited space around the motor due to the housing.

    Thanks in advance.

    Renan

  • Renan,

The DRV8711 is a gate driver that requires 8 external FETs.  I don't think it is a good solution if space is a concern.

The 3V rating on the stepper motor does not have much to do with choosing a stepper driver.  Our stepper drivers regulate current and output will be a PWM that controls the current and voltage to the motor.

I really need to know what their available supply voltage is and current requirements.  For example, you say they are using the DRV8834 today.  How are they using that device?  At what voltage and current?
