DRV8306: Adding circuit breakers to BLDC circuit

Part Number: DRV8306
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMD18200,

Hi,

I recently started working with the DRV8306EVM board, and with the help of   was able to get it up and running. Since then I've made more progress and now have it controlled using a raspberry pi and have checked some key parameters using a scope. All is going great and I'm very happy with where we are at so far....but I now have a quick question. Sorry if this is more of a general BLDC query, but thought I'd try my luck here.

On our existing system we use the LMD18200 chip with a brushed DC motor (which is now being upgraded to BLDC), and in the motor output circuit there is a single pole circuit breaker. This is a final line a defence should the software over-current cutout fail or be over-ridden by a user. It also helps during electrical safety compliance testing (locked rotor test etc.).

So my question is - how do I achieve the same thing with BLDC / DRV8306? Do I need a 2 pole breaker to take out 2 phases and effectively disable the motor in a locked rotor / high current condition? Or 3 pole? or can it still be done somehow with a 1 pole CB?

Thanks!
