I think you are referring to the DRV8705H-Q1 which is the hardware variant and external resistors are used on the VDS pin to set up to 6 different levels. There is a table in the datasheet that specifies the 6 possible levels for the drain-to-source voltage across the external FETs. When this threshold is exceeded, an overcurrent fault will occur.
