DRV8353RS-EVM: DRV8353RS-EVM Failure

Part Number: DRV8353RS-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LAUNCHXL-F28379D,

Hello,

I have had two DRV8353RS-EVM failed and I need to know why.  The first one has bit 6 set on register 2.  The second one has bit 6 and 4 set on register 2.  I can not clear the faults.  The first unit was functioning fine when I have the DC bus at  24V. When I raised to the DC bus 85V it function for a short period of time before getting the fault.  On the second unit I started with a DC bus voltage of 60V.  I was able to tune the current loop and when I tried to spin the motor I got the fault.  I am driving the DRV8383RS-EVM with a LAUNCHXL-F28379D though an wire wrap cad to get the signals in the correct location.

The software I am using is from Matlab/Simulink Motor Control block set.  I did set register 3 and 4 to the same parameters as the TI software that came with the EVM.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help

  • Steven,

In some applications (using certain motors or algorithms) the gate drive strength set by default on the EVM is too much for the small FETs we used which can sometimes damage the driver. This sometimes shows up as gate drive fault or VGS faults which you are seeing. I would recommend using the lowest IDRIVE settings and trying your experiments again.

Do you have any spare DRV8353RS devices you can swap onto the EVM? If not I can look into sending you some if they are available.

    Regards,
