Explains why automotive and chassis-grounded systems generally require high-side rather than low-side switching, covering ground-shift, shared-return interruption, and shock-hazard considerations.

Answer

HSS

Why use a high-side switch instead of a simpler low-side switch?

High-side switching is required when:

  • Chassis-grounded loads — in automotive, most loads are grounded via chassis; a low-side switch inserts resistance in the ground return
  • Safety — disconnecting the positive supply leaves the load wiring at GND when the device is off.
