BQ25790: occasionally will set IBAT_OCP_STAT bit

Part Number: BQ25790

Hi,

my customer is using BQ25790 and will occasionally met the problem that  IBAT_OCP_STAT bit will set, but there is no reason for this bit to set.

My understanding is that  IBAT_OCP_STAT bit will set only when the battery discharge current reaches 11.4A in the datasheet spec.

But there is no chance for them to meet such a high discharge current rating.

We've no idea how to determine the cause of the bit set.

  • HI Howard,

We are not aware of any false trip issues with IBAT_OCP.  MInimum is 9.3A.  I suggest monitoring the current which a scope (current probe or differential voltage across a resistor) to see if there is a spike.

    Regards,

    Jeff

  • Jeff,

I would like to know the implementation of how the device detect OCP.

Is it that there is an internal hardware comparator that compare the BATFET discharge current with a threshold, and the comparator output will flip when the discharge current is larger than the threshold?

So we should use a scope to measure the current injecting to BAT pin?

  • Howard,

You explanation is how I understand OCP works, as well.  So yes, measuring the current going into BAT pin should be the correct method to test.

    Regards,

    Jeff
