BQ28Z610-R1: Best battery option for this gauge IC

Part Number: BQ28Z610-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25883, , GPCCHEM

Hello,

I'm currently using the BQ25883 charger + BQ28Z610-R1 gauge, with 2x 18650 Li-ion batteries in 2S1P configuration, as my main circuit needs at least 6V. However, I had a problem with a fake 18650 battery, and now I'm having trouble finding the ones from Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, LG, and other trusty brands. Even when I find them, how do I know they're not fake? I've seen Youtube videos of someone showing 2 Panasonic NCR18650B batteries, one fake and one original, and they look the same.

And so, I'd like to ask a few questions about it:

1) Are 18650 a good option (or the best option) for my board using the BQ25883 + BQ28Z610-R1? Maybe those batteries are good mostly for flashlights.

2) Is there a good place to buy batteries? Digikey/Mouser/Arrow have such a small selection that fit my needs, and almost no 18650.

3) For the 18650, I've designed my board using a battery holder for the Protected version of those batteries. But it looks like the Unprotected version is much more common. Is it something to consider? Changing to an Unprotected battery holder?

Thanks for your help.

  • Hello Ed,

The 18650 is a very common battery cell, you should be able to find a good chem ID match with any cell you choose using the GPCCHEM tool and the learning cycle will optimize for your specific cells further.

I wouldn't be able to give much advice for where to get batteries, where ever you can get the supply you need at a good price.

It's always good to have multiple protections on Li-Ion cells. This is a flash based gauge so it should recover from any protection events after POR.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller
