TPS61170 max current

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61170

The datasheet for the TPS61170 gives two formulae on page 14 to calculate the maximum output current and gives the example of 5V in and 12V out having a maximum current of 300mA.

Using the same figures given plus an efficiency of 90% and Ilim of 1.2A I calculate an Ip of 246mA and a maximum current of 454mA.

How do TI arrive at a figure of 300mA?

  • Yes, your math to calculate the Ip is correct.  This is the peak to peak ripple current in the inductor.

The calculate the maximum output current, it is best to use the minimum value of Ilim, not the typical value.  If you use the typical value of 1.2A, then yes you would have an output current of 454 mA.  When using the minimum value of 0.96A, then you get a number around 315 mA.  Rounding down to the nearest hundred is 300 mA.
