LM5060-Q1: Excel Calculator minimum output capacitance

Part Number: LM5060-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5060

Hello!

I am having an issue with the excel spreadsheet where it says we need a minimum output capacitance of 10uF but am unsure the caution of preventing disruptions at turn off. Can you help explain? Thanks for the support!

  • Hi Kevin,

The output capacitance helps to reduce the slew rate of output voltage during turn-off events thereby reduces the swing of Vout towards negative voltage due to path inductance.

Please let me know if more clarification is needed.

  • Hi Rakesh,

    Thanks for the speedy response.

The place i would like clarification is on how to decide if we need output capacitance and why the excel sheet doesnt let me put 0uF. When i look through the datasheet it mentions that not all applications need output capacitance in section 8.2.1.2.5 but the spreadsheet is forcing me to put at least 10uF in that cell. I am unsure if there is a difference in the excel spreadsheet using "Load Capacitance" (maybe capacitance local at the load) vs output capacitance (capacitance local to LM5060 output).

Right now the customers design is using no output capacitance so we cant check everything in the spreadsheet when it is forcing us to do 10uF.

    Regards,

    Kevin

  • Hi Kevin,

The output capacitance requirement/need is primarily driven by the load. Please use the attached unlocked version and proceed.
