BQ40Z50-R1: Unknown fail state in field returns

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50

Hello, we have previously had some unknown fault happening in the BQ40Z50-R1, discussed in previous thread from 2019.

We had the BQ40Z50 (R0?) made in 2016 before and that worked without issues.

We have now received a whole lot of returned claims for batteries that has shut down into an unrecoverable state.

It is not possible to reset the devices and it does not communicate. The only way to wake it up is to remove the battery from the BMS and reconnect it.

We have seen this happening with the R1 and R2 versions, not the R0 version.

What is happening with these BMS?

  • Hello,

There is not be enough information to determine what a possible issue could be.

The R1-R4 versions are just firmware updates. If the new firmware version is used a new golden image would need to be used otherwise the DF could be corrupted. If it's based on firmware it's most likely not hardware. You can check the change list to see if anything has been modified that could impact your system.

Have you pulled the black box data or lifetime data to see if any faults have been triggered?

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • We are using a correct golden image for the version so it should not be corrupt from that.

The returns we are getting have been working in the field for 1-3 years before getting into this unrecoverable state.

The cells are healthy and and not overdischarged of overcharged.

We had the R0 version before and then switched to R1 without changing anything except the version and the new parameters in the golden image. We have not seen this unrecoverable state in the R0 units.

We have not found any unexpected faults in the lifetime data. We are working on getting the information out from all the units.

The units are not in permanent failure mode, the permanent failure functions are not activated on these units.
