BQ76952: Cell balancing in Relax mode vs. Sleep mode:

Part Number: BQ76952

There's confusion regarding cell balancing in Relax mode vs. Sleep mode:

If I enable Sleep mode, but disable balancing while in Sleep mode, it seems that I can no longer balance cells? is that correct.? If Sleep mode is enabled, the device  will transition from Relax mode to Sleep mode when indicated...and so if I have disabled balancing during sleep, it appears that balancing will effectively be disabled???

..also, it appears that even after I disable that bit (bit2, CB_SLEEP) and reset the 952, Studio shows that cell balancing continues???  What else must I do to stop balancing in Sleep mode?

  • Hi Jeffrey,

The part is highly configurable and terminology may not be unique.  In general, yes, if you disable balancing in sleep mode and set balancing to run in relax mode, you have disabled balancing. Perhaps you plan to balance during charge or by host control.  However note in section 10 of the technical reference manual for balancing in relax mode that relax current is defined by "Settings:Current Thresholds:Chg Current Threshold and above the negative of Settings:Current Thresholds:Dsg Current Threshold."  while for sleep in section 7.3 relax is determined by "a current threshold given by Power:Sleep:Sleep Current"

Balancing is evaluated on the Settings:Cell Balancing Config:Cell Balance Interval, so if conditions change balancing may continue until the end of the interval.  The example on page 86 of the technical reference manual in section 10.1 is one of several possible situations, "For example, if the device is configured to avoid balancing during charge, and while balancing the pack begins charging, balancing will continue until the interval timer expires before it is disabled."

Check the thresholds and the timing, a shorter balance interval may allow balancing to stop sooner on entry to sleep mode.
