LMR33620: Other significant differences between the 2A, 3A, and 4A rated parts?

Hi everyone!

These are the specifications for my design:

  • Input Voltage: 12-35V
  • Output Voltage: 7.25V
  • Output Current: 1.5A

I was planning on using the LMR33620C since its 2A output current is plenty. I'd like to use an evaluation module before I go ahead and include it in the design, but one isn't offered for the 2A version, so I'm considering picking up the LMR33630EVM. My question is, is there any significant differences between the 2A and 3A rated versions that would make that pointless to do?

And furthermore since we're in a global part shortage at the moment, are they similar enough that the 2A, 3A, or even 4A rated versions could be dropped on the board based on what was available at the time? Hopefully there will be plenty of stock soon, but currently I have 25 of the LMR33620C parts and everything is sold out on the reliable retailers. Of course I'm talking about just the "C" parts with the 2100kHz switching frequency; I wouldn't try to insert an "A" part switching at 400kHz.

I went through the Webench design tools for the LMR33620C and LMR33630C and the recommended parts are close enough I hope I could potentially get away with it - the only differences are the recommended inductor is 4.7uH vs. 3.3uH respectively and output capacitors are smaller on the 3A version.

    Yes, the LMR33630EVM can be evaluated for performance in place of the 2A EVM. All operation and features will be identical between the 2 devices other than the current limit. 

    Regarding the 4A device, it is only available in 400kHz & 1MHz versions. You would have to evaluate it at a lower frequency of you would consider using it.
