UCC5870-Q1: Are the registers non-volatile and can the chip be used without using SPI after configuration?

Part Number: UCC5870-Q1

Hi,

I am using this gate drive chip in our project to drive a SiC power module. I have a question on the SPI and register configuration.

I am wondering if this chip can be used without SPI after configuration. Or each time shunting down, the registers will reset and when powering on again, the registers need to be configured again via SPI.

 Best Regards,
Shangjian

  • Hi, Shangjian,

    Cool project!

The registers are all volatile, so after a power-cycle, you will need to re-program them via SPI.

    Don

  • Hi Don,

Thanks very much. Is it possible to unplug the SPI MCU after configuration, i.e. just use SPI for initialization? or SPI MCU should always be three even if the real-time monitoring of the register status is not of interest?

In my testing with the evaluation board and the accompanying MCU and SPI GUI, it turns out that the MCU and USB connections cannot be removed after SPI configuration.

I am feeling that if SPI MCU is a must have for real-time operation of this gate chip, the design could be very complex as so many registers are needed to be set via SPI, SPI GUI software is ideally needed, and the extra isolation circuitry interfacing to the PC requires as well. Are these consideration of mine correct or not? I am wondering if it is possible to provide the code of the SPI MCU of the evaluation board to us customers to facilitate our design with this gate drive chip? Thanks

    Best Regards,

    Shangjian

  • Hi Shangjian,

If you program the driver and move it to the active state, you can disconnect SPI. But for every powering up, all registers need to be rewritten and also needs SPI command to move the driver from reset state to active state.

The EVM board is designed with 3000Vrms isolation between primary side and secondary side, so I think you don't have to remove the PC connection during the test.

For the there phase EVM board (https://www.ti.com/tool/UCC5870QEVM-045), we will release an example SPI configuration code in the next 1-2 months.
