About standalone buck boost charger

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24610, BQ25792, TL5001A, TPS61288

Hi,

Customers are looking for a buck-boost charger that works standalone.
Competition device is LT4020.
Do we have an alternative for LTC4020?

Condition is :
Vin=8V to 16V
Charge voltage =14.4V to 16.8V (4cell)
Charge current = 8A(max)

  • Hi Yusuke-san,

    TI currently does not have a standalone buck-boost charger.  The closest single IC fit is BQ25792 but even it cannot provide 8A.  I can recommend a 2 chip solution with a boost converter followed by BQ24610 if you want. What is the end application for this?

    Regards,

    Jeff

  • Hi Jeff-san,

    Thank you for your support.
    End application is auxiliary battery for drive recorders.

    you please tell me if there is an example of introducing a 2 chip solution for LTC?

  • Hi Yusuke-san,

    Lowest cost stand-alone solution would be TL5001A + external FETs configured to provide 17.5V/8A output followed by BQ24610 plus external FETS configured for 16.8V regulation and 8A charge current.

  • Hi Jeff-san,

    Thank you for your advice.
    Customers will consider a two-chip configuration as a candidate.

    They want the boost converter to be as small as possible.
    In the background, they decided to reduce the charging current.
    The battery is LiFePO4.

    Condition is :
    Vin=8V to 16V
    Charge voltage =14.4V(3.6×4cell)
    Charge current = 4A(max)
    LiFePO4 :2.8V(Discharge voltage),3.2V(Working voltage) ,3.6V(Maximum charge voltage)

    We plan to propose a set of TPS61288 and BQ24610.
    Vin=8~16V→TPS61288→17V→BQ24610→14.4V

    ・I think the BQ24610 can support 4-cell LiFePO4 charging.
     Is my understanding correct?
    ・Could you give me some advice if you have any concerns about this?

    Best Regards,
    Yusuke

  • Hi Yusuke-san,

    Your proposal should work.
