ESR Requirements for TPS51315/TPS59116

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS59116, TPS51315

Hi,

I am not quite sure about the ESR requirements on Cout for the TPS51315/TPS59116. In D-CAP Mode, to keep the loop stable, the ESR or Cout or both should be large enough. Howvere, to get the required feedback signal, the data sheet mentioned the ESR shoud meet the required ripple. Is the ESR the minimum or maximum value to meet the required ripple, or the ESR is where it should be? Thank you.

Best Regards,

Chun-Te Li

  • Hi Chunte,

For D-CAP mode controller such as TPS51315, you need to meet the two equations for loop stability and Jitter performance. Please see the datasheet page 18, equation 6, 7 and 13. Same as TPS59116, ESR and capacitance should meet equation 24 and 25 in the page 17 of datasheet. ESR is the minmum value. That means you need to choose a output capacitor with great than the ESR value required in the equation.

    Thanks,

    Nancy
