BQ76930EVM: Shutdown configuration without communication with MCU

Part Number: BQ76930EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76930, BQ76942

Hi Team,

When customer using BQ76930 in BMS, BQ76930 is communicate with MCU though I2C.

When MCU is out of work, it can't communicate with BQ76930. Can BQ76930 enter shutdown mode? Is it a configurable status?

Could you confirm this for customer? Thanks.

Best Regards

Songzhen Guo

  • Hi Songzhen,

The BQ76930 can not enter shutdown mode on its own.  It is dependent on the MCU for control.  If the MCU ignores the part the BQ76930 will continue to operate in the last mode the MCU left until it encounters a fault which will turn off the FET outputs (OV, UV, OCD, SCD), or until the supply voltage falls the the VSHUT level.

  • Hi Expert,

Thanks for your feedback. I find BQ76942 can meet this requirement though RST_SHUT pin. Could you comment on this? Thanks.

  • Hi Songzhen,

Yes, the BQ76942 is similar in that it is a 10 cell monitor, it has many more features than the BQ76930 including the RST_SHUT pin which can be used to shutdown the part if driven appropriately.  There is also the host watchdog feature which may be helpful, see the technical reference manual section 5.2.16 Host Watchdog.
