BQ78350-R1: Charge FET will not turn off after Valid Charge Termination despite setting FETOption[CHGFET] = 1

I'm having an issues that is repeatable across two evaluation boards. Neither have been sealed yet.

The following conditions are all met:
FETOption[CHGFET] = 1 in dataflash
BatteryStatus[DSG] = 0 for at least two hours
AverageCurrent < Charge Term Taper Current for at least 5 minutes
Max Cell Voltage + Charge Term Voltage > chargingvoltage()/number of cells for at least 5 minutes
Accumulated capacity since above conditions were met > 0.25mAh
FC bit is high in Battery Status for at least 5 minutes.
RSOC has been set to 100%

I would expect the charge FET to turn off under these conditions, but it does not. Does the FET control only activate for valid charge terminations when the pack is sealed.

  • I have confirmed that the VCT and TC bits are both set as expected, but the charge fet remains turned on.

    Does the chg_test have anything to do with the behavior of the CHG FET on valid charge termination?

    I would expect the CHG FET to turn off under these conditions. Can you send me the .gg.csv file (click Export on the Data Memory screen of BQStudio)? I can try to investigate whether there would be any other reason for the CHG FET to remain on.

  • Hi Greg,

    I do not see anything in your settings that explains why the CHG FET is not disabled. You mentioned chg_test - are you using this command?

  • I'm using the TOGGLE CHG FET button in the BQ software, which enables both the FET and the CHG TEST bit.

    Is there a way to just turn on the charge and discharge fets without enabling the test bits?

  • Hi Greg,

    Yes, the FET_ENABLE command button in BQStudio will enable both FETs. You can also set the FET_EN bit in the Mfg Status Init register  - this will enable the FETs by default.

    I do not recommend using the TOGGLE CHG FET command.

  • Ok, so now the FET turns off when VCT is achieved.

    Now it doesn't seem to turn back on without intervention from the user. It will turn on during discharge, but it won't stay on after and won't charge. What is the setting that makes the CHG fet enable itself? I thought it would turn on after the cell voltages got below a certain point.
