SELECTION OF CORE

In case Power Factor Corrected Boost Converter, it is observed in every example a toroidal core inductor is given. If we use EE type core for the Inductor, is there any limitation?(Operating Switching frequency is 50kHz.)

  • Hello Champak,

Thank you for you interest in TI PFC controllers.
There is no problem using an EE-type core in place of a toroidal core.  Toroidal cores were often used in the past because there were less expensive and could handle an overload without saturating, but the economics have changed in favor of gapped ferrite cores.  The main limitation is to avoid saturating the core.  It must be designed to handle the highest flux density that the system might impose on the core depending on the worst-case peak current condition.
