TPS26630-33EVM: Up to IEC610000-4-5 Level 3

Part Number: TPS26630-33EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2663, TPS2662, TPS2660

Hello Expert,

Our customer want to test IEC610000-4-5 Level 3 w/ this EVM and it is their spec.

Vin is both adaptor 12V or PoE 48V.

Could you give us what's the additional components(TVS diode. etc) to pass IEC610000-4-5 Level 3 on this EVM?

If you tell us guidance or marking to add peripheral components on the EVM schematic for protection surge, I will follow your guide and test.

Best Regards,

Michael

  • Hi Michael,

During the surge we have to limit the transient voltage with in the abs max voltage rating of TPS2663 by using appropriate TVS diode at the input.

Level 3, I expect to be 2kV surge with 2Ohm. We need bigger TVS diode to shunt this 1kA of current. Replace the existing TVS diode on EVM with two SMDJ14A in series for evaluation. It is not possible to pass surge with 48V operation because the TVS clamps at higher voltage causing to abs max violation for TPS2663.

A typ 24V operation gives enough headroom for the TVS diode for clamping during surge events

    Rakesh

  • Hi Rakesh,

    Thanks for your kind reply.

I want to clarify about your answer.

    1. About 24Vin, your recommend is two SMDJ14A in series.

Can we use SMDJ28A instead of two SMDJ14A?

If no, could you explain the reason?

Because I have to propose good solution to our customer.

    2. About 48Vin, is there no solution?

I have to design this part.

Please provide a solution that can be tested.

If you send us test available TVS component,  we will be happy to test it.

I'm looking forward to receiving your good answer.

    Best Regards,

    Michael

  • Hi Michael,

As you see, TPS2663 has abs max voltage of 67V.

SMDJ28 diode has break down voltage (Vbr) of 31.10 V. while shunting the current, it clamps to Vc = Vbr + surge current * dynamic resistance of SMDJ28 diode

    SMDJ28 diode has dynamic resistance of 10mOhm (typ). For 1kA current, you get Vc = 31.1 + 1000A*10mOhm = 41.1V

With two SMDJ28 diode is series you will be at 82.2V much above the abs max voltage of TPS2663.

The above calculation is with conservative typ values, you may be even at higher clamping voltages.

For 48V, we don't have any solution.

    Best Regards, Rakesh

  • Hi Rakesh,

About 24Vin, below was my question.

Is it possible to use only one SMDJ28 instead of two SMDJ14? Is it right?

If SMDJ28 is not suitable for only one not two, which part can we use?

Where can I find dynamic resistance value of SMDJ28 on data sheet?

and What's name of the manufacturer?

Bourns TVS diode has a good max. peak pulse current.

About 24Vin and 48Vin respectively, could you please let me know right part number?

If there is no part about 48Vin, you can say no.

    5.0SMDJ TVS Diode Series (bourns.com)

    Best Regards,

    Michael

  • Hi Michael,

You can get parameter details of the TVS diode from manufactures Littlefuse, ST, Vishay

For 24V, use two SMDJ14CA in series

    No part for 48Vin

    Best Regards, Rakesh

  • Hi Rakesh,

Which of SMDJ14A (Uni type) or SMDJ14CA (Bi type) is right part?

You mentioned both parts on your above comment.

    Best Regards,

    Michael

  • Hi Michael,

It should be bi-directional type as surge pulses are +/- type.

  • Hi Rakesh,

    I have another question.

    1. When Vin is 12V, Can we use SMDJ14CA for IEC610000-4-5 Level 3?

    2. When I checked schematic and BOM of tps26630-33 EVM, 1000uF AL Cap. is on the output.

This is so big. Can we remove this?

    3. Finally, Is it possible to remove schottky diode and 1000uF cap on the output for IEC610000-4-5 Level 3?

If not, could you please give me guide?

    BR,

    Michael

  • Hi Michael,

    Please find below my inputs

    1A) SMDJ14CA  should work

2A) For demo purpose, we used 1000uF. Yes, you can remove it

3A) Schottky diode is required to clamp the -ve going voltages by freewheeling the inductive current during turn-off events. so, we suggest to use it.

  • Hi Rakesh,

Here is our customer's test condition.

When I checked their test condition, I don't know well but I think that seems like Open Circuit.

So I think that there is simple solution and low cost for 24Vin, 48Vin respectively.

Could you please review and give us best TVS Diode solution on both Vin and Vout each 24Vin, 48Vin?

    * Test condition

  • Hi Michael,

    SMDJ28CA for 24Vin case

Unfortunately, we don't have eFuse solution to support 2kV/2Ohm surge on 48V rail

    Best Regards, Rakesh

  • Hi Rakesh,

Could you please recommend schottky diode on the output path?

I got an additional information from our customer.

In case of 48Vin product, I heard that they conduct surge test without 48V power applied.

If this test condition, don't you have a solution to protect?

I'm looking forward to receiving solution from you.

    BR,

    Michael

  • Hi Michael,

    Use B260-13-F as schottky diode

    TPS2660, TPS2662, TPS2663 supports up to 60V operation.

    Best Regards, Rakesh

  • Hi Michael,

Please check TPS2660, TPS2662, TPS2663 devices and let us know if there are any follow-up questions.
