DC/DC solution for high voltage input

I have a project with 3740 ~ 5060VDC input, 24V output, and 150W power. Is there a suitable solution to recommend?

Can I use two high-voltage MOS or IGBTs in series to replace the MOS in the low-voltage DC/DC solution. Such as IXTT02N450HV, IXTX1R4N450HV, IXYT30N450HV.

  • Hi Zhang,

Interesting project. These requirements are way outside of even typical HV requirements I work with but the concepts of power conversions are the same. You need a topology, controller, isolation, adequate gate drive. For the topology, consider a two-switch forward which can divide the input voltage to VIN/2 for each MOSFET. You can model and simulate various topologiues, including the two-switch forward/flyback using TI Power stage designer. For the controller, consider any TI general purpose PWM. For the isolation, you need to carefully consider the transformer design. TI Power stage designer will help with the transformer design parameters but building sufficient isolation requires deep knowledge and experience of creepage, clearance, barrier tape, wire insulation, leakage inductance etc. The gate drive will be interesting because the IXTT02N450HV, for example has an intrinsic gate resistance of 76 Ω! A general purpose PWM with 1 A drive capability will not be able to overcome such a large series resistance. I believe an external gate drive circuit will be needed between the PWM and MOSFET VGS and you need a level shifted high-side drive signal that can be achieved by floating a general purpose low-side driver or designing a custom, HV, gate drive transformer. TI does not have any reference designs covering this high voltage conversion but hopefully I've helped get you on the right track?
